Insurance Discounts
Whether it's auto, home, health or life insurance, chances are you'd rather be paying less for it than you already are. The good news is that there are many discounts that can help you cut costs without cutting coverage. The most obvious discount is the one you earn for bundling auto and home, or auto, home and life insurance under one insurer. Here are a few more of the most common discounts.
Auto Insurance:
Common auto insurance discounts include:
- Anti-theft devices: That LoJack, car alarm, or engine immobilizer may save you money, as well as protecting your car.
- Safety devices: Some anti-lock braking systems, traction control systems, and electronic stability control systems can net you an insurance discount.
- Age: If you're over fifty, you may qualify for a "mature driver" discount.
- Driving record: A clean driving record with no tickets for at least three years can give you a lower insurance price.
- Driver education: Even if your high school days are in the distant past, you can save money on car insurance by taking a defensive driving class. As long as you're not doing so to clear a ticket, you will earn an insurance discount that lasts up to three years.
- Good grades: Insuring a student driver is never inexpensive, but you can reduce the cost if your teen or college student has a B-average or better.
Home Insurance:
Home insurance discounts most companies offer include:
- Home security: An active, monitored home security system can often net a discount.
- Home safety: Fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, indoor sprinkler systems, and carbon monoxide detectors sometimes earn a discount.
- Location: Your home's proximity to a fire hydrant, fire station, police station or hospital may net you an insurance discount.
Health and Life Insurance
While there are not as many health and life insurance discounts available there are at least two:
- Safe habits: if you are a non-smoker, you may save money on insurance.
- Family plans: while the insurance for the primary insured will not decrease, the more dependents you have, the less expensive coverage for each will be.
Other discounts
There are also some discounts that apply to almost all insurance; they include discounts for loyalty, if you remain with the same insurer for several years, for non-use – if you've never filed a claim, and for setting up electronic payments. In this age of going green, you may also save money if you agree to receive statements electronically.
These are just a few of the insurance discounts that exist. There are many more that you can only get if you ask your insurance agent. Remember, the worst thing they can do when you ask, is say no.
